Educator Remembers The Alamo

A superintendent from a small town in Texas is challenging the status quo of testing and budget cuts in the Lone Star State.

From the Times Record News:
"Perrin-Whitt CISD Superintendent John Kuhn listened to a recent address by Sen. Florence Shapiro, Senate Education Committee chairwoman, and was so angered that she favored state testing over teacher salaries that he came up with an unusual way to speak out.

He adapted the famous William Barret Travis letter that was dispatched from the Alamo — when Travis painted a grim picture of his plight and pleaded for help — and e-mailed it to Sen. Craig Estes, Rep. Rick Hardcastle, Rep. Jim Keffer and Rep. Phil King.

Just as Travis began his letter, "I am besieged by 1,000 or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna — I have sustained a continual bombardment and cannonade for 24 hours and have not lost a man." Kuhn wrote, "I am besieged by 100 or more of the Legislators under Rick Perry. I have sustained a continual bombardment of increased high-stakes testing and accountability-related bureaucracy and a cannonade of gross underfunding for 10 years at least and have lost several good men and women."
